Navigating Artistry, Identity, and Collaboration with Sonder The Africanime

In this episode of Sludge Underground, we interview non-binary artist Sonder The Africanime, about their music, marketing, and latest album, The Swamp Forest Siren. Sonder The Africanime is an independent artist who has been making waves in the alternative music scene. In this interview, they discuss the following

Consistency & Gratitude

Sonder's target audience is mostly teens and members of the alt community. They emphasize the importance of staying consistent in showing gratitude to their fans.

It's important to stay true to yourself and your art, and to show appreciation to your fans. When artists get bigger they tend to forget where they came from, but I try to stay consistent. I always show gratitude to my fans, I want them to know they’re the people that make it possible for me to keep sharing my art.’

Collaborators

The Swamp Forest Siren features Wolffisdead, 2ka, Witney., and MXMNT. With a list this dope, we had no choice but to find out how they went about finding the right collaborators for the project.

‘I don’t quite remember how I went about picking the people that were a part of the album, but these are people that I have really good vibes with, they’re good people and great artists. They’re just so humble and so nice with their talent. They respect their craft so much, and they take time in everything that they do. I only work with people that are passionate about their work.’

Being A Non-binary Artist

When asked about what being a non-binary artist means to them, Sonder The Africanime says the following

It means freedom, honestly. As much as we try to stress the idea of people having to get our pronouns right, it’s so much more than that. It’s looking at the binary world and seeing people who live according to certain stereotypes and it’s not their fault, this is just how society is. It is also a really good learning experience for me as an artist and for the people that listen to me because as an artist I have the opportunity to educate so many people about the other gender identities that exist outside of just the non-binary, and I get to open people up to a world where it’s really not that deep.’

In The End…

Sonder The Africanime embodies the essence of artistry, reminding us that music isn't just about numbers or financial gain; but rather a medium for change, understanding, and acceptance. Whether you're a dedicated fan or a newcomer to their music, their journey inspires us all to embrace authenticity, gratitude, and the beautiful diversity of our world.
