Plug Music Agency: Unpacking One Of South Africa’s Leading PR Companies with Owner Warren Gibson

Success in the music industry, whether as an artist or a band, hinges on several key elements, with the role of a publicist being paramount—an aspect we frequently emphasise.

In this piece, we delve into the realm of Plug Music Agency, one of South Africa's most prolific PR agencies. Plug Music Agency has left an indelible mark, collaborating with both local and international artists and significantly contributing to the burgeoning alternative music scene.

Our conversation revolves around Warren Gibson, the agency's founding member. Warren, previously a label manager for the eminent independent record label Just Music, handling international labels such as Ministry of Sound, TVT, V2, Beggars Group, and Vagrant, sheds light on the agency's origins, distinguishing factors, and more.

Why Plug Music Agency was Started

When questioning Warren about the motivation behind starting Plug Music Agency, it became evident that he shared a vision akin to what inspired Sludge in its inception.

Warren articulates, ‘I realised there were so many really great independent bands and musicians who were not getting the love they deserve in terms of radio play and media coverage.’

What Sets Plug Music Agency Apart

To stand out in a competitive market, a PR agency, like PMA, must possess distinct qualities that give them an edge over others.

Warren elaborates, ‘I think what gives PMA the edge is the fact that I have been in the industry for so long in one form or another. Firstly playing in bands myself as well as working for labels. So I understand both sides of the industry. I know what bands are looking for and need, but I also have the label experience so I understand that side of it also.’

The Agency’s Selection Criteria

With an illustrious PR client list featuring notable names such as RAMfest, Lay Bare Recordings, Yndian Mynah, The Tazers, Mongrel Records, and Ruff Majik, maintaining high standards is imperative for Plug Music Agency. We queried Warren about PMA's criteria for selecting potential clients.

Warren emphasises, ‘It all starts with the music, no matter the genre. If I believe the songs are great then that is half the battle won. The other qualities, are professionalism from the artist and a certain drive that not all of them have. Too many times people are not willing to put in the effort, or they want instant fame or acknowledgement. It unfortunately doesn’t work that way, PR is a marathon not sprint.’

Upcoming Projects

Plug Music Agency is engaged all year-round, and we obtained exclusive insights from Warren regarding the upcoming and ongoing projects the agency is diligently working on.

Warren divulges, ‘At the moment I’m working with a fantastic Dutch label called Lay Bare Recordings, they have some incredible artists on their roster with some great new releases coming out over the next couple weeks. I’ve also just finished working on RAMFEST, where one of the headliners The Ocean are one of my all time favourite bands so that was great. A couple other exciting projects and releases coming up but nothing I can really chat about that the moment.’

25 Years of Wisdom: Advice from Warren

Drawing from his extensive 25-year plus tenure in the industry, working with some of the industry's biggest names in South Africa and globally, we asked Warren to share three essential traits or qualities musicians should possess to succeed in their musical endeavours.

Warren imparts, ‘It sounds cheesy, but talent is an obvious one, without the songs you have nothing. The other two really are patience and persistence. As I mentioned too many people just give up after the first couple rejections from media or radio. A lot of this is about timing, and being at the right place at the right time.’

In Conclusion

By now, it should be apparent why Plug Music Agency stands as one of South Africa's leading PR agencies and why artists should consider enlisting the services of a publicist. We also trust that this article equips you with invaluable insights and knowledge imparted by Warren regarding what constitutes a successful musician. Always remember, in this industry, it's a marathon, not a sprint.
