Lungelo Manzi’s Journal Entries 2: A Scintillating Return

Lungelo Manzi returns from a brief hiatus with Journal Entries 2, a 6 song EP exploring faith, hope, and love through personal experience and hindsight. Clocking in at just under 20 minutes, its soothing sound might leave some wanting more, but considering it's a follow-up to the stellar four-track Journal Entries (2024) and his acclaimed debut ADULTING ANONYMOUS, the length feels just right in context.
As someone who considers the Black Dog trilogy a standout in Lungelo’s catalog, his artistry has never been in doubt. He continues to evolve, now working with UK-based producer Metz for JE2. His move from Durban to Johannesburg still hasn’t shaken his ability to immerse listeners in lyrically intricate storytelling. Every lyric and instrument feels deliberately chosen, filling in gaps from his hiatus and maintaining the authenticity fans love.
While every song shines, Intentional and Ekhaya stood out for me. Ekhaya features a laid-back, relaxing tempo, with its hook delivered in isiZulu, making it feel close to home while retaining international appeal. It carries a strong, relatable message about staying on the grind, loved ones considered. Intentional has more bounce, with beautiful chord progression on the synth and gorgeous leads that pop up in all the right places. It also features some of my favourite harmonies on the EP, which are complemented by familiar yet well-delivered flows on the verses. Lungelo’s effortless transition from rap to clean vocals is a highlight.
Tracks like Levity draw you in with storytelling as Lungelo opens up about a friend that was dying of cancer and him not being able to help them. Meanwhile, Sliced Mango and The Kerb lean into jazz influences, with the double bass on Sliced Mango standing out as a personal favourite.
This EP will resonate with fans of R&B, hip-hop, and jazz. It’s both lyrically rich and easy to enjoy as a laid-back listen. My only critique is that Lungelo plays it somewhat safe, sticking to his strengths. Given what he’s pulled off on tracks like Different by Mikhalé Jones or Nomathemba, the EP could’ve done with at least one experimental song to add a unique layer. However, that’s a minor nitpick.
Ultimately, Journal Entries 2 is a beautifully crafted project that highlights Lungelo’s strengths and leaves listeners eager for what’s next. Whether you’re looking for lyrical depth or smooth, jazzy vibes, this EP delivers. It’s out now, stream it here.
