NoiseFix Special: SA Metal Scene Braces For Fulci’s Brutal Sounds From Italy

2023 has been a fantastic year for metal in South Africa. We had the battle for Wacken event earlier in the year, Ramfest kicking our teeth in a few weeks back, and now the homies at NoiseFix have decided to add fuel to the fire by bringing Italian Brutal Death Metal heavyweights Fulci for 3 shows between PTA, JHB, and CPT from September 28–30, 2023.

Fulci are a four-piece Brutal Death Metal band from Caserta Campania, an agricultural, commercial, and industrial city located 36km north of Naples in Italy. The band formed in 2013 and was named after Italian horror film director Lucio Fulci, so it should come as no surprise that the band’s themes are mainly based on gore, zombies, and horror movies.

Thanks to our pals at NoiseFix, we got a chance to chat with Dome, the guitarist of Fulci, prior to the SA leg of their tour to try gauge what ticket holders can expect. So sit back and enjoy the article because it’s the calm before the brutal storm that’s about to hit you square in the face this coming week.

Fulci’s Sound

The South African audience may not be familiar with Fulci’s sound, so we got Dome to give us its precise description.

Dome says, ‘Ok, let's keep it simple. Imagine Florida Death Metal and Mortician meeting Italian horror cult movies. This is Fulci!'

[Breaking the 4th wall here, but holy smokes guys, I’m so amped. Look at this description; you okes better mosh hard at these shows😭🔥]

… Okay, back to the article🤙🏾

First Show in SA

It’ll be Fulci’s first time in SA, so we got Dome to let us in on how they’re feeling about playing here and what they expect from the SA metal scene.

‘It feels wild and sick! We've never been to South Africa, but we are from the south as well, so we are expecting a warm welcome!'

Preparations

It is no secret that touring can be quite taxing, both mentally and physically. Dome opens up about how they’ve gone about preparing for the tour, and it’s actually not as deep as you might think.

When asked about preparations, Dome says, ‘Drinking many beers, smoking some weed, and listening to Groinchurn and FreexMoney!’

Is there a better preparation combo than this one? We think not!

Side Quests

Believe it or not, South Africa is known for more than just having one of the sickest metal communities in the world, but also for its beautiful landscapes and wildlife. We tried to find out what places or experiences Dome and the lads are looking forward to exploring during their downtime, and this is what he said.

‘Would be awesome to experience nature and wildlife, visiting the amazing places in South Africa, but we don't have much time between one show and the next. I think we will just see the club's toilets and the stinky van!’

Words of Wisdom

Letting Dome leave without dropping some pearls of wisdom would’ve been an injustice considering he’s in one of the biggest bands to come out of Italy and has been active for 10 years.

When asked to give some advice to metal musicians in the scene, Dome says, ‘I don't know actually. Anyway, just be yourself, and don't try to be someone you are not. Respect everybody and have fun!’

Conclusion

We hope you’ve learned a bit more about Fulci through this article and that it has gotten you as excited as we are to have such an incredible band grace our shores. The guys at NoiseFix have worked extremely hard to bring you these shows and have pulled together insane lineups consisting of SA favourites like Peasant, Sunken State, Displeased Disfigurement, Halvar, Twenty One Children, Human Nebula, Mithras Crowned, and JUT, so we hope to see you in the pit.

Fulci will be playing on the following dates at the following venues:

28 Sep at Jarr Bar, PTA

29 Sep at Rumours Lounge, JHB

30 Sep at Armchair Theatre, CPT
